The Matseliso School Choir insisted that the students at CHS didn't miss out on enjoying their performance from celebration evening so decide to treat us to an impromptu rendition at lunchtime today. Their performance was fantastic and our students were truly enthralled- we had possibly the entire school observing across three floors!

In true South African style we hosted a Braai for the friends and family of Culcheth2Soweto (BBQ as we know it!) The evening proved to be a fantastic get together for all of the people who have worked so hard to make this project a success. We had great food, rounders, home made cakes, football, Limbo, netball, tug-of-war, dancing and lots and lots of laughs. The students enjoyed a typical Culcheth school dinner today. They were amazed at the selection available- a huge difference to their typical school dinner of Pap.
Our visitors have immediately settled in and were eager to get involved in school life.
The Matseliso learners were tasked with leading lessons to Culcheth HS students about life in Soweto. They covered education, politics, equality and much more.
Mrs Stevens was keen to promote the Great British tradition of baking with our Sowetan visitors. On the menu was Victoria sponge, butterfly and chocolate cakes. The pressure was on for the students as whatever they produced was to be served at our Braai in the evening. Students carried out flame tests to identify unknown chemicals. Each chemical gave off a different colour to help with the identification. This was followed by oxidation and reduction reactions, and finally the thermite reaction in a fume cupboard which is used to fuse railways together. Our visitors experienced a wonderful French lesson today with Madme Lepitit. They quickly picked up Bonjour, Salut, Comment t'appelles-tu?, Je m'appele and much more. Their favourite part though was definitely getting to enjoy some French delicacies; Baguette, Camambert, Crepes, Pain Au'chocolate and croissants! Whilst the learners were busy enjoying our school day the Matseliso Educators (teachers) Mrs Olifant, Mrs Nogcinisa & Mrs Toumane spent the day at Quarry Bank Mill with Mrs Stevens. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed their day at the National Trust site- Thank you Amanda.
Our apprentices got to spend the morning questioning Booysie about life in Soweto. They learned all about apartheid, Johanesburg, tribes, Hector Peterson and much more. Booysie is definitely a man full of wisdom. When we met him, he was full of character. I just knew at that moment he was a nice guy. He's so friendly- he gave me a hug!!! On Wednesday, we had a discussion with him about South Africa. It was really interesting; there were many topics discussed such as the Apartheid and the shooting of the little boy Hector; he had a very positive attitude towards the African president. He's so knowledgeable it's unbelievable. He's amazing! We found out his love and compassion for Mandela and how he celebrates Mandela day. The night before, we prepared 5-6 questions on a wide variety of topics. He managed to answer all the questions with thoughtful answers. As the days progressed, Booysie chatted with loads of people and at the Daten, before I played, Booysie said to me, "When you come to South Africa, we will jam together on the piano." All in all, it was an amazing week with him; I'd love to have him as my headteacher. Simran Prakash |
