I know some of us are very eager to get to Soweto... so much that bags are being packed already! So here's a reminder of the suggested kit list:
- Suitable and appropriate clothes for travel and for days in school/activities. There is no return to the hotel after leaving in the mornings so don’t take ‘dressy’ or ‘going out’ clothes or shoes as they will not be needed. Comfort is key!
- Sun cream – you know your child’s skin type so will leave the decision on which factor to take up to you. Students must carry the sun cream with them at all times
- Bug spray which has 50% DEET in it. This is the most powerful and effective (Jungle Fever brand does this bug spray)
- Afterbite pen in case of being bitten
- A sun hat if your child is sensitive to heat or gets headaches in the sun
- A pair of sunglasses
- A couple of packs of cereal bars/non-perishable snacks for each day. Sometimes we are out for a long time with no access to shops or vending machines
- A plastic refillable water bottle – available in supermarkets for a few pounds
- A rucksack or large bag to be taken out every day to the school and during activities – this needs to be big enough to carry water, sun cream, scrapbooks, personal belongings - no handbags!
- Any relevant medication including paracetamol, ibuprofen, travel sickness, hay fever tablets etc. if required
- Spending money – just a small amount, no more than £60 in SA Rand as the food kitty will cover most things. Around £20 in Dirhams (Dubai) and some sterling for Manchester airport. Food and drink are included on the flights. It is recommended that students carry their spending money in their hand luggage and not in their suitcase.
- Small tube of toothpaste (under 100ml) and toothbrush in hand luggage for flight
- Travel pillow/flight socks if you feel this is necessary
- Toiletries to last the duration of the visit (shower gel/soap, hair brush/comb, facial wipes, toothbrush and tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, hair bobbles/pins, electrical adaptor plug, deodorant – aerosols cannot be taken in hand luggage)
- Underwear
- Nightwear
- Three pin plug adaptor (round pins – can be purchased on amazon for around £5)
- Mobile phone/tablet/camera and charger
- Any electrical items students wish to take
- Swimwear and towel if we have a BBQ at Booysie’s house as he has a small pool
*Please note that students are fully responsible for any personal belongings taken on the visit
